PFLAG National released this statement in reaction to the Supreme Court’s June 30, 2026, decision to allow states to ban transgender girls and women from playing on school athletic teams:
“For PFLAG families, today’s decision . . . means that transgender athletes can continue to be affirmed for who they are in places where the law allows – and invigorates our LGBTQ+ and allied community to expand those protections,” said Brian Bond, PFLAG National chief executive officer. “The parents, families, allies and LGBTQ+ people of PFLAG will continue to advocate for our trans loved ones to have the freedom to be themselves, everywhere. Trans people belong, and deserve to have access to the benefits of sport like everyone else.”

Washington state has protections for transgender student athletes, although there is a statewide initiative on the November ballot, IL26-638, that would subject girls to “invasive, medically unnecessary, and potentially harmful genital exams to verify their sex for sports’ physicals” in an attempt to keep trans girls from playing sports. PFLAG Seattle urges you to register to vote and vote NO on this initiative. PFLAG Seattle has endorsed the No Hate in WA State campaign fighting to defeat this initiative. You can learn more about this harmful initiative on the No Hate in WA State website.
