From KOMO News:
“A proposal to bar transgender girls from participating in girls’ sports has failed for a second consecutive year in Washington, falling short of the supermajority required for approval by the state’s high school athletics governing body.
“On April 20, 2026, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) voted on the measure as part of a slate of 22 proposed amendments, most of which will take effect Aug. 1.” The WIAA and its member schools provide opportunities for all students to excel in athletics, performing arts, and other activities while promoting fair play, sportsmanship, and teamwork.
“Even if approved, the proposal would not have been implemented because it conflicts with Washington state law, according to the WIAA. State law prohibits discrimination based on gender identity, and association officials have said any rule violating that standard cannot be implemented.”

This issue isn’t going away, however. The November election ballot will include Initiative 26-638, which states:
“This measure would require policies prohibiting students it defines as ‘biologically male’ from competing with or against female students in certain interschool athletic activities that are intended for female students only. Students who choose to participate in such activities must provide a statement from the student’s healthcare provider verifying the student’s biological sex, based on reproductive anatomy, genetic makeup, or normal endogenously produced testosterone levels. These requirements would apply to individual or team athletic competitions.”
We urge you to vote NO on IL26-638 in November.
