LGBTQ+ small businesses in Washington can now gain free state certification through a new program designed to boost visibility and connect them with contracting opportunities. Launched July 1 in partnership with Gov. Bob Ferguson and the Office of Minority and Women’s Business Enterprises, the LGBTQ Business Enterprise program adds LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs to a public directory used by state agencies, schools, and local governments seeking diverse vendors.
“Washington state has a thriving, diverse business community,” said Ferguson, as reported by The Seattle Times. “This program ensures we are recognizing and supporting our LGBTQ business owners.”
Advocates say the certification sends a powerful message amid baseless federal attacks on diversity and inclusion, with Harden Consulting Group founder Kimberly Harden calling it a way to affirm that LGBTQ+ businesses are “here” and “not going anywhere.”
