Begin the Journey with PFLAG Seattle
If you have a friend or relative who identifies as LGBTQ, and you would like help to understand this person, you will find a rewarding experience at our support meetings. Talk with someone who has been there.
If you identify as LGBTQ, and you are thinking about “coming out” to family members, friends and/or co-workers, you will find that our support meeting can help you address the issues and questions that will come up for you and those you are coming out to.
If you are interested in learning more about the LGBTQ community in general, the “coming out” process, religious and spirituality issues, etc., please feel free to attend our support meetings.
If you are interested in advocating or participating in social, educational or political issues concerning the LGBTQ community, or in addressing the educational program for gay and lesbian youth in school, please contact us about volunteering with our committees, speakers bureau, info tables, and other related activities.
What We Are About
PFLAG Seattle provides an opportunity for dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity, and acts to create a society that is healthy and respectful of human diversity.
We meet every month as a support group. In these groups every individual is at a different stage in the journey to understand the nature of sexual orientation and gender identity. We share our experiences, what we have suffered or enjoyed, and what we have learned.
We all have LGBTQ friends and acquaintances. In some cases we don’t even know who they are, and when we do find out, we may not know how to respond.
Those who have attended support meetings, in Seattle or Renton, are pleased to discover that each and every one of us, straight or gay, goes through almost the same steps as we better understand each other.
The Coming-Out Process
When a person member realizes that they are not straight, it may take years to feel free to come out to friends and family, or it may never happen. PFLAG provides a safe place to talk about your feelings and meet others on the same journey.
Many gay and lesbian people also attend PFLAG Seattle meetings to get a better understanding of what their family members are going through. Their participation is very helpful to the parents and family of other gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender.
Understanding and love grow rapidly, and every meeting feels like a victory. If a child has come out to you, or if you would like help in coming out to your family or friends, come to a PFLAG support meeting. We can also be of help if you are out but are not well received by family or friends. Our meetings are confidential, so you should not fear being “outed” by attending.
Not to be Cured but to be Understood
PFLAG Seattle does not consider homosexuality as anything that can or should be “cured.” Sexual orientation is commonly classified as heterosexual, bisexual or homosexual. There is no evidence that people choose to be homosexual, bisexual or queer. Neither is there evidence that “poor parenting” causes children to change sexual orientation, nor does “proper parenting” affect sexual orientation.
Local Support Meetings
PFLAG offers three monthly support meetings in the area: Seattle (Capitol Hill and North Seattle) and Renton.
