Online Support Meeting w/guest speaker Dr. Caitlin Ryan, Family Research Project
October 5 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm PDT
Join Dr. Caitlin Ryan, director of the Family Acceptance Project, to learn about her work in LGBTQ health and mental health over the past 45 years. Dr. Ryan and her team at San Francisco State University conducted the first research on LGBTQ youth and families and developed the first evidence-based family support model to decrease family rejection and serious health risks – including suicide, substance abuse, homelessness and HIV – and to promote family acceptance and well-being for LGBTQ children and youth. FAP’s research identified more than 100 specific family rejecting and accepting behaviors that parents and caregivers use to respond to their LGBTQ children and has shown how these behaviors increase health risks and build healthy futures for LGBTQ young people. As part of this work, Dr. Ryan has trained thousands of diverse families, providers and religious leaders on increasing family acceptance and support for LGBTQ children and youth, developed multilingual evidence-based education materials that are Best Practice resources for suicide prevention and helped ethnically, racially and religiously diverse families to learn to support their LGBTQ children, including families that are very socially and religiously conservative. Dr. Ryan’s work has been recognized by national, state and local organizations, LGBTQ, faith-based, civic and arts organizations. Her work is changing how families nurture their LGBTQ children and how services are provided across systems of care.
Dr. Ryan will speak for the first hour of the meeting and answer your questions. The support portion of the meeting will be in the second hour.
